Los Angeles Red Light Cameras Now Being Removed

ATS, the red light camera company that ran the program for the city of Los Angeles has begun removing their cameras, controllers, and wireless communication equipment.  The process will continue until January 16th when the last of the cameras will be removed.  The LADOT will then begin removing the rest of the infrastructure such as the poles, housings, etc.

Due to our efforts, the City of Los Angeles ended ticketing at the thirty two red-light camera locations on July 31st.  As city staff was negotiating a supplemental agreement with ATS to provide access to citation data collected while the ticketing program was in operation, automated ticketing supporter Councilmember Bernard Parks attempted to slip a provision into the contract to keep the cameras from being removed.  When we discovered this back-door gambit by the councilman and former Los Angeles police chief, we sprung into action and beat back this latest attempt to keep the program going.  The vote at the City Council was a resounding 10-3 in favor of removing the cameras.  The other two Council Members who voted to keep the cameras were Jan Perry and Tom LaBonge.  A provision was then inserted into the supplemental agreement to require ATS to remove the cameras within 30 days from the execution of the agreement.  The contract was signed on November 30th and ATS in now fulfilling their obligation to remove their equipment.
